OpenMage & Magento 1 upgrade
Modernize an existing Magento 1 store on a current OpenMage baseline through a controlled staging process.
For an existing Magento 1 store, current OpenMage is usually the most practical modernization path. It preserves the established application model while making current PHP, database and security work achievable with less disruption than a platform rebuild.
This service covers both Magento 1-to-OpenMage migrations and upgrades of an existing OpenMage store to a newer supported baseline. The scope is built around the store you already operate: its data, theme, extensions, integrations, custom business logic and production constraints.
What the upgrade is intended to achieve
- Move the application away from an end-of-life or unsupported core baseline.
- Establish a maintainable OpenMage release and compatible PHP and database environment.
- Preserve the catalog, customers, orders, CMS content and store configuration.
- Reconcile historical patches, core edits and local overrides with the target codebase.
- Restore a repeatable staging, deployment and rollback process.
- Resolve compatibility problems discovered in extensions, templates, integrations and infrastructure.
The outcome is not simply a changed version number. It is a reviewed store that can be maintained and upgraded with fewer unknowns.
Magento 1 to OpenMage
OpenMage is the community-maintained continuation of the Magento Community Edition 1.9 codebase and provides a direct upgrade path for existing Magento 1 stores. That makes it possible to modernize many established stores without rebuilding the storefront and every business integration on another platform.
The migration still requires engineering work. We inventory the existing installation, create a recoverable staging copy, reconcile the old Magento core and patches with OpenMage, resolve compatibility issues, run application and database updates, test critical store flows and prepare the production cutover.
See how a Magento 1 to OpenMage migration works for the detailed fit criteria, preservation goals, security considerations and step-by-step process.
Existing OpenMage upgrades
An older OpenMage installation can have many of the same upgrade risks as a Magento 1 store: skipped releases, outdated PHP dependencies, overridden core classes, abandoned extensions and database changes that have never been tested together.
We select the target release against the application and infrastructure—not only against the latest available tag. The upgrade is rehearsed in staging, including intermediate steps when required, before any production change is scheduled.
Controlled upgrade approach
- Discovery. Review the current Magento or OpenMage version, runtime, database, extensions, integrations, patches and customizations.
- Upgrade design. Choose the target baseline, identify blockers and define the staging, backup and rollback strategy.
- Staging migration. Reproduce the store and perform the complete upgrade away from production.
- Compatibility work. Repair or replace incompatible code, templates, extensions and integration behavior within the agreed scope.
- Verification. Test administration, catalog, customer accounts, checkout, payment, shipping, email, cron and store-specific critical paths.
- Production cutover. Deploy the verified changes in an agreed window and complete post-release checks with a rollback path available.
What requires particular attention
Core modifications and local overrides must be reviewed rather than overwritten. Payment and shipping modules, custom checkout flows, ERP or warehouse integrations, search, cache, scheduled jobs and transactional email frequently need targeted testing.
If the store shows signs of compromise, security containment and remediation must be included in the plan. An upgrade alone does not remove malicious code or restore trust in an unknown installation.
OpenMage or Magento 2?
OpenMage is usually the lower-risk practical path when an established Magento 1 store still serves the business well and its custom behavior would be expensive to rebuild. Magento 2 remains an option when its business and technical benefits justify the larger migration, operational change and ongoing ownership cost.
We assess that decision from the actual store and business goals. We do not treat a Magento 2 rebuild as the automatic answer to Magento 1 end-of-life.
Start with an assessment
Include the public store URL, current Magento or OpenMage version, PHP version, hosting context, important integrations, known customizations and the main reason for the upgrade. If some details are unknown, describe what is available and we will identify the missing discovery items.
Do not send passwords, private keys, database exports or customer data through the public form. Secure access is requested only after the initial assessment.

Here’s the letter I wrote after a successful upgrade: Hi xxxx, That is simply amazing. I have spent days and hours looking for a solution for a the other problem I mentioned. You found and fixed it straight away. If you ever do an ‘upgrade/transfer’ to Magento 2, please let me know. It will be the next step at some point.
I am so happy I found you. Sometimes it’s difficult to know who to use and what their skill level is. I’m more than impressed. If you need more money for the extra work, just send me a pay link. I am very happy to do this in appreciation. Also, I will post a comment on your blog.
You can deploy any time now. The site is not being presently used a lot. I was getting it ready for an upcoming function. You will no doubt put a maintenance flag on it. For now, thank you again for all your good work. Have a great weekend.
All the very best Peter from Australia
Hello,
Just wondering if you patch the system to the current patch level after the upgrade process from 1.9.0.1 to 1.9.3.7?
Thanks, Bill
