Migrate Magento 1 to OpenMage
Move an established Magento 1 store to a current OpenMage baseline through a controlled, recoverable staging and production process.
OpenMage is usually the most practical modernization path for an established Magento 1 store. It keeps the familiar Magento 1 application model while providing a maintained codebase that can run on a supported web stack.
This is an upgrade and compatibility project—not a storefront rebuild. The goal is to retain the store’s working business logic and data while moving away from an end-of-life Magento 1 baseline.
What is OpenMage?
OpenMage is the community-maintained continuation of the Magento Community Edition 1.9 codebase, with a direct upgrade path for existing Magento 1 stores. Its supported 20.x branch continues to receive security work, bug fixes and compatibility improvements.
OpenMage supports current PHP and database environments. The exact PHP, database, search, cache and infrastructure targets are selected against the requirements of the chosen OpenMage release during assessment—not assumed from the store’s present hosting configuration.
When this route is a good fit
Migration to OpenMage is particularly useful when a Magento 1 store:
- still supports a valuable, established business;
- contains custom workflows or integrations that would be costly to rebuild;
- needs a supported PHP and database path;
- has accumulated patches, core edits or local overrides that need controlled consolidation;
- needs security maintenance without immediately taking on a Magento 2 rebuild.
It is not automatically the right answer for every store. A heavily compromised installation, an obsolete extension stack or a business already planning a complete replatform may require a different scope.
What we aim to preserve
The migration is designed to retain the existing catalog, customers, orders, CMS content, configuration and store structure. Themes, third-party extensions, integrations and custom business logic are reviewed and carried forward where they remain compatible and operationally justified.
A direct upgrade path does not mean a blind file replacement. Core modifications, rewritten classes, local overrides, custom checkout behavior, payment and shipping integrations, cron jobs and external APIs must be identified and tested. Where an old customization conflicts with the target baseline, we repair, replace or explicitly exclude it as part of the agreed scope.
Controlled migration process
- Assess the current store. We inventory the Magento version, PHP and database runtime, extensions, integrations, core changes and operational constraints.
- Define the target baseline. We select the OpenMage release and compatible infrastructure, then document blockers, assumptions and rollback needs.
- Create a recoverable staging copy. The migration is rehearsed away from production with source, database and media backups in place.
- Normalize and migrate the codebase. We reconcile the Magento core, patches, local overrides and OpenMage changes instead of overwriting unknown modifications.
- Resolve compatibility issues. We update or repair extensions, templates, PHP code, database behavior and integrations found during the migration.
- Run application updates. Database upgrade scripts and required data changes are executed and reviewed in staging.
- Verify the store. We test administration, catalog, customer accounts, checkout, payment, shipping, email, cron and the store-specific critical paths.
- Plan and perform production cutover. The approved changes are deployed in a controlled window with a clear rollback path and post-release checks.
Security is part of the migration
Magento 1 is end-of-life, so applying the last historical SUPEE patches does not create a current security baseline. A migration should establish a supported OpenMage release, review public exposure and known compromise signs, and remove obsolete or unsafe components discovered during the work.
If the store may already be compromised, containment and incident review come before—or run alongside—the upgrade. Moving infected code onto a newer baseline does not remove the intrusion by itself.
OpenMage or Magento 2?
For an existing Magento 1 store, OpenMage is usually the lower-risk practical route when the current application still serves the business well. Magento 2 remains an option when its business benefits justify the larger migration, operational change and ongoing ownership cost.
We assess that decision from the store’s actual goals rather than treating a Magento 2 rebuild as the default answer.
What to include in the initial request
Send the public store URL, current Magento and PHP versions, hosting context, important integrations, known customizations and the main reason for the migration. If you do not know every detail, describe what is available and we will identify the missing discovery items.
Do not send passwords, private keys, database exports or customer data through the public form. Secure access is arranged only after the initial assessment.
